DRT Polices the Depths
What’s the deepest diving crankbait you own?
For me, it’s probably the Strike King 10XD, one of several “oversized” plugs that get down in the range of 25 feet. It’s been one of our best tools at Lake El Salto, and indeed produced the biggest bass I’ve caught there. I’ve purchased some other comparable lures from Storm, OSP and 6th Sense, but the Strike King is my confidence lure.
Of course there have been some sinking crankbaits over the years that can be fished at just about any depth – as long as you have enough line and patience. I tried the now-discontinued one from ABT and was underwhelmed.
But now there’s a new entrant in the field which blows away the competition.
It’s DRT’s “Police” and the company claims that it’ll hit 40 feet on a long cast.
DRT stands for “Division Rebel Tackle” and they’re a Japanese company with a US arm. They are probably best known for the Tiny Klash, a modular glide bait that I purchased on a drop but have (much to my embarrassment) yet to fish.
Much to my surprise, Tackle Warehouse does not carry their products, but I’ve seen the crankbaits available at The Hook Up Tackle, Three Rivers Tackle, Bait RLGN, Clear Lake Outdoors and Lake Pro Tackle.
A few warnings:
This is a big ass crankbait – almost 8 inches long in all and over 3 ounces. You’ll need a proper heavy-duty cranking rod.
You’ll also need a reel with the torque and line capacity to handle this bait. Remember, it may not achieve max depth until partway through the retrieve. To get it down to 40’ at a distance of 100’ you’ll have more than 100’ of line.
The MSRP on them is $64.99. They may be even more on auction sites. If you can’t throw away that kind of money, make sure you have a quality lure retriever and the patience to use it.
As noted above, I haven’t fished it yet, but here are some videos demonstrating this deep diving beast in all its glory:
